يصور الظل الطويل واحدة من أكثر قضايا القتل المتسلسل شهرة وصدمة في العالم، وهي مطاردة بيتر ساتكليف، التي يطلق عليها اسم يوركشاير سفاح، بين أكتوبر 1975 ويناير 1981، قامت الشرطة بأكبر مطاردة في التاريخ الإجرامي البريطاني. استغرق البحث عن ساتكليف خمس سنوات، وشارك فيه أكثر من ألف ضابط، وغير طريقة عمل الشرطة البريطانية إلى الأبد.
