You can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter per area, if you fail to do this you can't catch another Pokemon in that area. 2. If your Pokemon faints it's presumed "dead", therefore you can't use it anymore. 3. Nickname all your Pokemon, for a stronger bond (yay for sadists). 4.
