Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat on a dry, slow pitch, but India's disciplined bowling and spin attack gradually squeezed the Pakistan batting lineup. Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal provided Pakistan with a positive start before Akmal was dismissed by Irfan Pathan. Butt reached a well-paced half-century but was then run out after a misunderstanding with his partner. Younis Khan struggled to score freely on the difficult surface, while Pakistan went through a remarkable 21.2-over period without hitting a boundary. Mohammad Yousuf eventually took responsibility for Pakistan's innings. After patiently reaching his half-century, Yousuf accelerated late in the innings, producing a valuable unbeaten 83 from 88 balls to guide Pakistan to 239 for 7. Pakistan needed their bowlers to make the most of the challenging conditions, but India's top order remained composed. Shoaib Akhtar gave Pakistan an early breakthrough by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar for just 14. However, Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir added 82 runs to put India firmly in control. After both were dismissed, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh took charge. Dhoni attacked the Pakistani bowling with powerful strokeplay while Yuvraj was equally aggressive against both pace and spin. The pair added a crucial 105-run partnership, with both batsmen reaching half-centuries. Yuvraj eventually fell for 58, followed shortly by Dhoni for a brilliant 63, giving Pakistan a late glimpse of hope. But India needed only 15 more runs, and Robin Uthappa and Irfan Pathan completed the chase. India won by 5 wickets and took a 1-0 series lead.
