HOW TO Perform a KETTLEBELL RDL | Cues for Safe Hinge Movements with Myles Cooper & Logan Webber

Volleyball

Volleyball coaches often need to assist their athletes in building strength and power off the volleyball court. However, unless the coach has a background within the field of strength and conditioning, it can be difficult to catch if their athletes are performing resistance training exercises with proper mechanics. In this new USA Volleyball series, Strength 101, Myles Cooper, Head Athletic Performance Coach for the BNTs, and Logan Webber, Men’s Beach NT Member, assist coaches and athletes in understanding how to properly execute a variety of foundational resistance training exercises. In this video, the spotlight is on a kettlebell Romanian Deadlift (RDL), a hinge movement variation that allows athletes a greater capacity to strengthen the posterior chain in the lower body. Myles and Logan demonstrate cues for the correct execution, with special attention on the hip movement (the hinge) and common mistakes that can jeopardize safety. The video ends with a short explanation of common technical cue terms, neutral spine and tripod of the foot, that are used within the explanation of this exercise. 0:00 – Introduction 0:18 – Understanding the Hinge Pattern 1:12 – Kettlebell RDL Setup and Positioning 1:50 – Performing the RDL Correctly 2:50 – Common Kettlebell RDL Mistakes 3:35 – Fixing Knee and Back Positioning Errors 6:20 – Key Takeaways and Final Thoughts
